Level 1 — Notes (Part 1): Natural Notes

Welcome to the beginning of a new long‑form music series — a step‑by‑step journey that shows how a complete beginner can grow from their very first note into a fully developed musician. This is Part 1 of a 3‑part mini‑series on Notes — the bottom, foundational layer of the pyramid you’ll be climbing.

Before we begin, imagine a pyramid.

A huge one. Wide at the bottom, narrow at the top. Each layer represents a stage of musical growth — from the simplest idea to the highest level of musical achievement.

And today, we stand on the largest, widest, most foundational layer of that pyramid:

Level 1: Notes.

Everything above it depends on this layer. Everything you will learn later is built on what you learn here. This is the ground floor of your musical journey.

The Seven Natural Notes

Every melody, every riff, every harmony you’ve ever heard begins with just seven natural notes:

A B C D E F G

These seven notes repeat endlessly, higher and lower, like steps on a ladder. They’re simple. They’re universal. They’re the raw material of all music.

If you can understand these seven notes, you can understand the entire musical world that grows from them.

But there’s more to the story.

The Notes Between the Notes

Right now, you’ve seen the seven natural notes — the main letters of the musical alphabet.

But music isn’t made only of these seven steps. There are also notes that live between most of them.

These in‑between notes are called accidentals.

Accidentals use two symbols:

• # (sharp)
• b (flat)

And here’s the simplest way to understand them:

• # means go to the RIGHT
• b means go to the LEFT

That’s it.

We’ll talk later in the series about why right and left matter, and what “steps” really mean. For now, just understand the direction:

• A sharp pushes the note upward, to the right.
• A flat pulls the note downward, to the left.

These accidentals are the in‑between notes that give music color, tension, and movement.

Why This Matters

If you understand natural notes — and later, the notes between them — you understand the raw material of music.

Every chord, every scale, every progression, every song… they all begin here.

This is the ground floor. This is Level 1. This is the bottom layer of the pyramid you imagined earlier — the foundation that supports everything else.
