About Play Better Music Today
I’m Maestro X. I’ve spent more than three decades living and breathing music, and this blog is my way of putting everything I’ve learned into your hands so you can play better music today — no matter where you’re starting from.
Who I Am (Without Telling You My Name)
I play both guitar and piano, in just about every style you can think of: rock, pop, jazz, blues, metal, worship, singer-songwriter, funk, soul, and a few genres that probably shouldn’t exist but were a lot of fun anyway. Over the years I’ve learned that good musicianship isn’t about fitting into one box — it’s about understanding the fundamentals so deeply that you can move between styles with confidence.
I choose to stay anonymous and go by Maestro X because this site isn’t about my face or my ego. It’s about you, your playing, and your progress. The music world already has plenty of personalities. What most players really need is clear, honest guidance from someone who’s been around the block more than a few times.
From the Road to the Practice Room
Professionally, I’ve played in at least three touring bands, logging countless miles, soundchecks, and late-night drives. I’ve played tiny clubs where the monitors barely worked and big stages where every note felt like it echoed for miles. I’ve made mistakes in front of thousands of people and learned how to recover so fast the crowd never knew.
Off the road, I’ve taught over 4,000 one-on-one private lessons to players ranging from total beginners to seasoned pros. That kind of repetition teaches you what actually works in the real world — not just what looks good in a textbook or a flashy YouTube thumbnail.
Because I’ve worked with so many different musicians, I understand the common sticking points: the mindset traps, the technical plateaus, the theory confusion, the “I practice but I don’t get better” frustration. You’ll see all of that addressed here, in plain language.
Who This Blog Is For
Play Better Music Today is for anyone who cares about playing well — not just playing fast or loud.
- Complete beginners who feel overwhelmed and don’t know where to start.
- Self-taught players who have gaps in their knowledge and want to finally connect the dots.
- Returning musicians picking up the guitar or sitting back at the piano after years away.
- Working pros who want fresh ideas, better systems, and a no-nonsense perspective from someone who’s been there.
If you care about groove, feel, tone, dynamics, and musical storytelling, you’re in the right place. If you only care about impressing people with speed, you might still find something useful here — but I’m always going to nudge you toward depth over flash.

Why I Started This Blog
After 30+ years of playing, touring, teaching, and learning from musicians far better than me, I realized I was repeating the same core lessons over and over. Not because people weren’t listening, but because the fundamentals of great playing are surprisingly consistent.
This blog is my way of consolidating decades of knowledge into one place. Instead of you needing to sit across from me for hundreds of lessons, you can read through the articles here, apply what fits your situation, and come back whenever you need a nudge in the right direction.
I want this site to feel like having an experienced friend in your corner — someone who takes your playing seriously, but never forgets that music is supposed to be fun.
